Swash plate (SP) is intended for changing collective pitch of main rotor and cyclic pitch control depending on azimuth position.

Till the present time, helicopters of Mi-8/Mi-17 family use SP of type 8-1950-000, which operation started in 1980s. It practically exhausted all options for improvement of service life and other characteristics and cannot be recommended for application of on newly developed helicopters.

The purpose of development of SP 8-1960-000 is to eliminate the downsides specific to previous swash plate 8-1950-000 (low maximum values of TBO and assigned service life, labor intensity of maintenance during operation, etc.) on Mi-8Т, Mi-8MTV-1, Mi-17, Mi-17-1V, Mi-171, Mi-171Е, Mi-8AMT, Mi-172 helicopters and their modifications. Swash plate 8-1960-000 was launched in batch production at JSC Stupino Machine Production Plant (SMPP) in 2014.

SP 8-1960-000 is swash plate of new generation created by initiative of Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant and Stupino Machine Production Plant, and its design includes absolutely new engineering solutions:

  • use of new slider bearings which do not require lubrication in the process of operation and having less weight;
  • use of new design of pitch horn drawbar, that increases flight safety;
  • provision is made for new design of plate which increased rigidity created more comfortable conditions of operation of bearing;
  • design of basic load-bearing parts does not make provision for for operation of strengthening, that had a positive effect for opportunity of implementation of repairs and maintainability;
  • number of details of corrosion-proof materials increased;
  • weight is reduced, repairability is increased;
  • 100% interchangeability with the existing swash plate 8-1950-00 in accordance with the service bulletin.

SP 8-1960-000 initially has value of service life comparable with service life of existing swash plates or exceeding them and, that is important as well, its design contain potential allowing to increase service life properties in the process of operation 2 to 3 times.

Technical characteristics of SP 8-1960-000 allowed to apply is it on the advanced helicopter Mi-172A2.

Today, Stupino Machine Production Plant together with Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant conducts the work for increasing the assigned service life of SP 8-1960-000 from stated 8000 hours to 12000 hours.

 

A.V. Khazov, Supervisory Board Chairman of Aviation Company «VITYAZ-AERO» shared his experience in operating a modernized splashplate (8-1960-000) installed on the helicopter Mi-8MTV-1 (RA-22986).

«I hereby inform you that our company has already been successfully operating a modernized splashplate 8-1960-000 manufactured by JSC SMPP (hereinafter referred to as AP 8-1960-000), installed on a Mi-8MTV-1 helicopter RA-22986 for one year. The operation of the aircraft takes place in severe climatic conditions of rapid temperature changes and rarefied mountain air. Currently, operating time of AP 8-1960-000 is 329 hours . While operating splashplate 8-1960-000 showed an excellent performance and we have no complaints about it, thanks to a number of advantages compared to its predecessor, namely:

 

- increased reliability due to new design of push rod linkage 

- the durability of the framework is increased;

- the weight of the part has been reduced by 5 kg;

- increased endurance indicators;

- reduced operating costs.

At present, we are considering the opportunity of our aircraft fleet further modernization in accordance with the bulletin T/AM-3339-BE-G.
